Woven Wheel Hand Embroidery Stitch Video Tutorial by And Other Adventures Embroidery Co

One of my favorite stitches to teach beginners is the woven wheel stitch, also known as the woven rose stitch or spider web stitch.  I love it because it looks so complicated, but it is really quite simple. (scroll down to see the video)

1. To start off draw a circle on your fabric (I like to use these erasable pens).

2. Then we need to create the foundation of the flower with an uneven number of spokes that start at the edge of the circle and all come together at the center.  For smaller flowers, I like to use 5 spokes.  For larger flowers I will often use 7 or 9 spokes.  And for a HUGE flower, I use 11 spokes.  You get the idea.  So long as you have an uneven amount of spokes, you are good.

3. Bring the needle up through the fabric right next to the center where all the spokes come together.  Then slowly start weaving the needle over and under the spokes.

4. Slowly continue working the needle over and under the spokes until you reach the outer edge of circle.

HINTS:

  • I usually use 6 strands of floss to create the stitch.
  • Keeping your thread loose will help create a fluffier flower.
  • Once your circle is complete, you can kind of gently squish your flower in order to reshape it a bit.
