HAWTHORNE

The Hawthorne design started, as all the best things do, with a mistake. One afternoon in the studio, I knotted up my floss — the kind of tangle that usually ends in a sigh and a snip — and as I looked down at the fluffy little chaos in my hands, I realized I was staring at the most delicious texture I'd ever made by accident. A few experiments later, that "mistake" became one of my most favorite embroidery techniques, and the entire Hawthorne Collection was born around it.

Every Hawthorne hand embroidery kit features a cluster of lush, dimensional fluffy flowers — the kind that practically beg to be touched.  It's a very tactile design, and quite possibly the kit that taught me to fall completely in love with textured embroidery.

An intermediate embroidery kit (and a beautiful next step). Hawthorne is marked intermediate for one reason: you'll want a working knowledge of the foundational stitches first. If you've completed a Meadow, Avonlea, Wildflowers or a Jardín kit — congratulations, you're ready. Hawthorne is the natural "what's next?" for stitchers who've nailed the basics and are hungry to add real dimension to their work. The fluffy-flower technique is taught step-by-step through videos, so you won't have to invent it yourself the way I did (though, frankly, I recommend the occasional happy accident).
