Fleur in Clementine: Woven Wheel Stitch

February 23, 2026

Woven Wheel is always my first stitch that I teach in my beginner embroidery classes.  I do this because it is surprisingly simple and yet packs a visual punch and makes one feel quite accomplished for their first attempt at hand embroidery.

This stitch is also known as Woven Spider Wheel, Wagon Wheel, and Wagon Rose.

The process of it is pretty simple:

  1. Create the spokes using straight stitch.  Keep in mind that you always need an odd number of spokes.
  2. Pull your needle up near the center of the flower.
  3. Weave your needle/embroidery floss over and under the spokes.
  4. Play around with the tension to see how increasing or decreasing it changes the look.  BUT for this particular design, I am keeping the tension pretty loose so that I can create a fluffier flower.

NOTE: This Fleur colorway is called Clementine and will be coming out in late Spring.
