So often when I meet people who are new to hand embroidery, they talk to me about how overwhelmed they are by the whole thing. They feel like they need to know ALL THE EMBROIDERY STITCHES before they can start a project.
My advice to them - start slow. There are countless embroidery stitches all over the world and it is definitely fun to learn about them. But first you need a foundation of stitches that serve as your baseline and which you can always come back to. Pick 3-5 stitches and master those. Once you master them, then by all means, go learn all those other stitches.
So to get you started, here is a list of 5 hand embroidery techniques that are my own baseline that I come back to all the time. These hand embroidery stitches are the ones that I use everyday and in almost every embroidery project that I have ever done.
